Where we are five years later

grayson_ga_wedding_videoWe often ask our couples where they see themselves in five years.

I can tell you that as we celebrate our wedding day + five years this Friday, that our answer would have been wrong, but never so right.

And while we aren't very far ahead of most of our couples in this journey of marriage, I wanted to take a minute to celebrate this milestone in our life, and share some of the simple lessons we've learned along the way.

Our First Five Years

Five years ago we said we wouldn't be living in our current home, but then the housing bubble hit. We also said we'd have at least one child, but to date the stork hasn't shown up. We would have a dog, but never would have thought we'd have two from the same litter.

The one thing we did call correctly is that today we are more in love than we were on our wedding day.

The trials and pitfalls that we have faced, only make love seem so much more necessary and stronger once they've passed.

 

What have we learned?

Marry Up
At least one of us got this one right. Sorry darling I got the better end of the deal. ;)

Love Each Other Well
This may seem obvious, but it is a decision to make every day. Will I choose to love my wife today the way that she needs to be loved?

Out server each other
Simple things like refilling a glass of water, to taking out the trash, doing the dishes, to feeding the dog. We've learned that if we take the time to find ways to serve the other person, then our marriage will always win.

Find Financial Peace
Today we are also celebrating the completion of our 4.5 year get out of debt plan courtesy of Dave Ramsey. We have no debt (except the house), and have found such freedom in the fact that we don't have fights over money. Creating a monthly budget and sticking to it has encouraged discipline and honest communication in our marriage. I can't explain how much peace there is in a household when you minimize the concern over your finances.

Love your God
Probably the most important thing we've learned on this list, is how important faith is in your marriage. Our faith journey has strengthened the resolve of our marriage and taught us that we can't do anything (including our marriage) without God. Learn from the example He gave us of how to love, and pass it on to your spouse, and your fellow man.

 

What we're still working on

Life is short, live it up

Work is great, rest is great, play is great

Don't sweat the small stuff

Love, Love, Love

A Personal Note

I want to publically thank my beautiful bride for 5 amazing years. I have been blessed by her life and her love. I wish that everyone could experience the true joy and gratitude that I feel as I think through the journey of our marriage. So darling, here's to many, many more wonderful years! I love you!

Get Married at The Opera

We had a wonderful opportunity to shoot the Get Married soiree at The Opera on Monday night.

Some of Atlanta's most notable wedding vendors were there to celebrate the fifth anniversary of Get Married.

I was reminded just how much talent there is in the wedding and event industry in Atlanta, and how privileged we are to be a part of the same community.
